I know that Plato formulated the law, "like attracts like", using the Greek word philia for attraction. This is mentioned somewhere in the Republicand is easy to verify with a Google search.

But what about the law, "opposites attract"? We know about this law from chemistry ionic bonds and magnetism magnetic poles but was there a similar formulation in antiquity, especially regarding human bonds such as friendship or marriage?

I read that 20th century sociology applied "opposites attract" to social contexts, but I'm more interested to know whether Greek and Roman philosophers did, too. I also read on this webpage that the ancient Greeks were aware of magnets and the fact that opposite poles attract.

Did they ever apply this principle to a social context? The four elements, however, are simple, eternal, and unalterable, and as change is the consequence of their mixture and separation, it was also necessary to suppose the existence of moving powers that bring about mixture and separation. The four elements are both eternally brought into union and parted from one another by two divine powers, Love and Strife. Love is responsible for the attraction of different forms of matter, and Strife is the cause of their separation.

If the four elements make up the universe, then Love and Strife explain their variation and harmony. Love and Strife are attractive and repulsive forces, respectively, which are plainly observable in human behavior, but also pervade the universe. The two forces wax and wane in their dominance, but neither force ever wholly escapes the imposition of the other.

Unlike the modern notion of force, say the attractive force of gravity, which is limited only to matter, the Empedoclean forces pervades not just matter but also the world of men, women and society as the extract alludes to. Once I heard someone say And he said that it had to be the same with everything else: things that are most like are filled with envy, contentiousness, and hatred for each other. The poor man is forced to be friends with the rich, and the weak with the strong Then he went on to make a very impressive point indeed, saying that the like is totally unqualified to be friend to the like; that just the opposite is true; that things that are completely in opposition to each other are friends in the highest degreesince everything desires its opposite and not its like.

It's like fireworks in your heart all the time. I always wondered, do opposites really attract? Now I know for sure they do.

I'd grown up going to the library as often as most people go to the grocery store. Jackson didn't need to read about exciting people or places. He went out and found them, or created excitement himself if there wasn't any to be found. The things I like are pretty simple. It's like I was a salad with a light vinaigrette, and Jackson was a platter of seafood Cajun pasta.

Alone, we were good. Together, we were fantastic. If earth was heaven and now was hence, And past was present, and false was true, There might be some sense But I'd be in suspense For on such a pretense You wouldn't be you.

If fear was plucky, and globes were square, And dirt was cleanly and tears were glee Things would seem fair,-- Yet they'd all despair, For if here was there We wouldn't be we. He who creates a virus, also has the antidote. He who creates chaos, also has the ability to create peace.

He who sparks hate, also has the ability to transform it to love. He who creates misery, also has the ability to destroy it with kindness. He who creates sadness, also has the ability to to covert it to happiness. He who creates darkness, can also be awakened to produce illumination.

He who spreads fear, can also be shaken to spread comfort. Any problems created by the left hand of man, Can also be solved with the right, For he who manifests anything, Also has the ability to Destroy it. But lust has no duration; it leaves you again in the desert. In danger he might find peace. And yet, of course, in peace there was danger. Being an imperfect creature in an imperfect world he would always know paradox.

And that was why in paradox there was always a kind of truth. That was why philosophers and soothsayers flourished. In a perfect world there would be no place for them.

In an imperfect world the mysteries were always without solution and that was why there was always a great choice of solutions. I was torn between wanting to be cradled and telling the world to go fuck itself, and those were opposite sides of the same coin. Good and evil, love and hate, night and day, sweet and bitter, man and woman, heaven above and the earth beneath--all those things are needful, one to the other, and who knows the end of each? The results are complete opposites with the greater saying, 'God's will is my delight.

Do Opposites Really Attract? Experts Weigh In

What would politicians do if there were no social problems? What would humanitarians do if there were no inhumanity? The opposite sides that seem to be fighting each other actually depend on each other, define each other, thrive with each other. Patton, The Bhagavad Gita. You only miss it when it disappears. The unity of opposites is the central category of dialecticssaid to be related to the notion of non-duality in a deep sense.

First suggested by Heraclitus c. Anaximander posited that every element had an opposite, or was connected to an opposite water is cold, fire is hot. There was, according to Anaximander, a continual war of opposites.

Anaximenes of Miletusa student and successor of Anaximander, replaced this infinite, boundless arche with air, a known element with neutral properties.

According to Anaximenes, there was not so much a war of opposites, as a continuum of change. Heraclitus, however, did not accept the milesian monism and replaced their underlying material arche with a single, divine law of the universe, which he called Logos. The universe of Heraclitus is in constant change, while remaining the same.

That is to say, when an object moves from point A to point B, a change is created, while the underlying law remains the same. Thus, a unity of opposites is present in the universe simultaneously containing difference and sameness. An aphorism of Heraclitus illustrates the idea as follows:.

The road up and the road down are the same thing. HippolytusRefutations 9. This is an example of a compresent unity of opposites. For, at the same time, this slanted road has the opposite qualities of ascent and descent. According to Heraclitus, everything is in constant flux, and every changing object contains at least one pair of opposites though not necessarily simultaneously and every pair of opposites is contained in at least one object.

Cold things grow hot, hot things grow cold, a moist thing withers, a parched thing is wetted. DK B Dialecticians claim that unity or identity of opposites can exist in reality or in thought.

If the opposites were completely balanced, the result would be stasisbut often it is implied that one of the pairs of opposites is larger, stronger or more powerful than the other, such that over time, one of the opposed conditions prevails over the other. Yet rather than 'stasis' the identity of opposites, there being unity within their duality, is taken to be the instance of their very manifestation, the unity between them being the essential principle of making any particular opposite in question extant as either opposing force.

For example 'upward' cannot exist unless there is a 'downward', they are opposites but they co-substantiate one another, their unity is that either one exists because the opposite is necessary for the existence of the other, one manifests immediately with the other. Hot would not be hot without cold, due to there being no contrast by which to define it as 'hot' relative to any other condition, it would not and could not have identity whatsoever if not for its very opposite that makes the necessary prerequisite existence for the opposing condition to be.

This is the oneness, unity, principle to the very existence of any opposite. Either one's identity is the contra-posing principle itself, necessitating the other. The criteria for what is opposite is therefore something a priori. In his criticism of Immanuel Kantthe German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel tried to systematise dialectical understandings and thus wrote:. The principles of the metaphysical philosophy gave rise to the belief that, when cognition lapsed into contradictions, it was a mere accidental aberration, due to some subjective mistake in argument and inference.

According to Kant, however, thought has a natural tendency to issue in contradictions or antinomieswhenever it seeks to apprehend the infinite. We have in the latter part of the above paragraph referred to the philosophical importance of the antinomies of reasonand shown how the recognition of their existence helped largely to get rid of the rigid dogmatism of the metaphysic of understanding, and to direct attention to the Dialectical movement of thought.

But here too Kant, as we must add, never got beyond the negative result that the thing-in-itself is unknowable, and never penetrated to the discovery of what the antinomies really and positively mean. That true and positive meaning of the antinomies is this: that every actual thing involves a coexistence of opposed elements. Consequently to know, or, in other words, to comprehend an object is equivalent to being conscious of it as a concrete unity of opposed determinations.

The old metaphysic, as we have already seen, when it studied the objects of which it sought a metaphysical knowledge, went to work by applying categories abstractly and to the exclusion of their opposites.

It is also considered to be integral to Marxist philosophy of nature and is discussed in Friedrich Engels ' Dialectics of Nature. Coincidentia oppositorum is a Latin phrase meaning coincidence of opposites. It is a neoplatonic term attributed to 15th century German polymath Nicholas of Cusa in his essay, De Docta Ignorantia Mircea Eliadea 20th-century historian of religion, used the term extensively in his essays about myth and ritualdescribing the coincidentia oppositorum as "the mythical pattern".Mel, over at Crushed Caramelwanted to know what we would do faced with this situation:.

You are in love and the person you have been courting for some time wants to marry you. Although you are very close, there is one main difference in your outlook. One of you believes in a Creator and wants to practice a particular faith. The other does not believe in a Creator and despises all religion.

When the two of you talk about beliefs, emotions run high and generally the conversations have to be cut short because it can become hurtful. You realize this may cause challenges, despite the love you share.

What would I do? This is such a fundamental matter and one that essentially defines who we are. Here is a question for you…and it is not meant to be controversial or provocative, I just wonder what you think.

I can see that if one partner did not believe in a Creator and was anti-religion and the other partner was very actively religious and constantly pontificating about it — there could be fireworks.

But what do you think of a couple who agree to disagree and decide to talk about it? Or the partner who believes in a Creator does so silently. Perhaps someone who believes in a Creator but steers clear of religions who seem to have their own agenda.

Someone who silently prays but does not speak about their beliefs to their partner because they know it would be provoking. I have a few friends in exactly that boat. I have seen a lot of love in those relationships, but also a lingering sadness. I am not, however, anti-religion. My answer is that even if they agree to disagree, each person, in her example, has deeply held beliefs that are fundamental to who they are, and those beliefs are in diametrical opposition.

Like Liked by 2 people. Like Liked by 1 person. With you on that, buddy. They want to share. They want to pray. They want to help. But if I were sick, and my partner began chanting prayers at me, it would make me so mad. It would really annoy me. But there are those who pray for you without you ever saying a danged word.

Who are the praying to? Like Like. I got along fine with him too and he never asked ME to come back. It worked out fine. Everyone in this family has a different religion and no one goes to church.Heck, we were all raised on Disney-ified versions of this I'm looking at you, Belle and Beast, and Anna and Kristoffso it's kind of hard not to buy into this concept.

Case in point: That motorcycle-loving jock you were obsessed with in high school. But this concept that opposites attract may have stuck around because it's kinda easy to think someone is your opposite when they're actually not—or not really. Do people match up best with others who are nothing like them? Are introverts a perfect match for extroverts and vice versa? What about partiers and homebodies? Night owls and early risers? If you were to take this literally, it would mean that you and your S.

But, in reality, you probably have more in common than you think. Research backs this up. One study published in the journal Psychological Science analyzed the digital footprints people left on Facebook specifically the stuff that they liked, as well as the things they posted about and found that most people interact with others that are pretty similar to them—online, at least.

Another study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychologytook info from 1, couples, friends, and acquaintances and surveyed them on their values, attitudes, and personality traits.

The researchers found that these people had a whopping 86 percent similarity on all the factors. That said, you and your partner can still be super different when it comes to stuff like your tastes in music, the kind of food you like to eat, what kind of clothes you like to wear, and a slew of other things—and that can be really, really sexy. But in reality, despite those few oppositional traits, you're probably more alike than you realize.

When you think of you and your partner as opposites, you probably focus on more obvious things, like clothes and what you like to do in your off-hours.

You have to factor in stuff like your overall attitudes, preferences, values, beliefs, and communication styles, Cilona says—and odds are, you match up on at least some of those things. For starters, Cilona recommends thinking of yourselves as being complementary to each other instead of being opposites. You can also think of your differences as ways to learn more for your own personal growth. If your partner is super outgoing, for example, maybe that will slowly push you to get out of your shell a little more.

Communication is clutch, Durvasula says. Then, maybe you can both give a little here and there : They can crash early with you one night; you can caffeinate and rally on another. Ultimately, mutual trustrespect, caring, and, you know, being hot for each other, are all the things that will help keep you together, Cilona says. When compiling the stats for Premier Betting you get to see how various teams perform and you can asses whether or not the draw is of any value.

I've mostly tended to make two bets - a safe bet (max 2. What nuggets would you share with respect to betting strategy. A tip that you give on a weekly basis and which I like is backing three games to end draw and if one of them ends draw, the punter will end with profit. However, I find choosing these games quite a difficult task because if none of those three matches end in a draw there would be quite a big loss (x3).

I would like to ask you: Which strategy do you use to try and predict that at least one game will end in a draw. This is highlighted in the Premier Football Betting Handbook. Then I look to see if the draw price offers any value and then I asses the form of the two teams involved.

How do I know what I should be betting. Should I take into account my overall profit and bet more as I earn more, or stick to picking up lots of small bets. Betting on football can be profitable but it should be fun and always kept in context. For example, is there money to be had in betting on corners if you do the research. For example if you wish to back a short priced selection. How do you keep disciplined. Discipline is the key to my draw strategy there will be a week or two where there are no winners but it is then you have to believe in the strategy and stick with it.
